After insuring with USAA for nearly 20 years, our real estate agent (USAA mover's advantage appointed, by the way) recommended we compare homeowner's rates when she saw what USAA was charging for premiums on our new house. I got quotes from 5 other large insurance firms, and they were all substantially less than USAA. When I called USAA to ask them about it, the manager with whom I spoke did not try to convince me to stay with USAA using logical argument or even a marketing pitch; rather he implied I was foolish to consider insuring with anyone else.

I cancelled all my USAA policies right away. I went with Metlife, who provided better coverage for over $1000 less in premiums per year (2 cars, 2 houses). That was about 6 years ago and I have been very happy with Metlife. I still bank with USAA and got a quick online auto quote recently just to see if anything had changed, and USAA was still significantly higher.

My only regret is not bailing on USAA insurance sooner.

Navy Mutual Aid provides a much better deal on term life insurance than USAA, also.
