Everything about professional aviation is based on "what if". If you don't train for and think about "what if", you have no place in the front seat of an airplane of any kind. Some low time guys do fine. If all they can do is handle "the radios and things like that", then the PIC is basically carrying them, and that's not good. It can make an otherwise enjoyable job both unsafe and unpleasant.
