FYI You would have been royally screwed (ie, working) in the same situation (regardless wether you had a single departure line or R days) under any PBS system. Keep that in mind if the subject ever comes up with your rep or another pilot.
instead of being a reserve he will build a custom VTO ,out of seniority order, and the poor sap senior to him that bid vto will get stuck with the holiday trip or RA left over for his line
