Actually flight attendants do not get the same level of checks. Pilots are vetted both when issued a private pilot license now and a check is run when they are issued a ATP. Those checks are in addition to the standard employment check which does not really consist of any other then a criminal record check. Its not a real back ground check.
And let's not forget all the other issues a Pilot has to verify on his FAA 1st. Class Medical, every 6/12mo. just to keep his licenses, such as the 'no DWI' or any other moving trafic violatoins, or any felony, etc. or thoughts of suicide or, or, or...
Yeah, pilots face just a little more scrutiny.
