The AFA will pursue flight deck jumpseats. That is the next step for them. Currently West pilots have the ability to ride an extra F/A jumpseat if it is available and no F/As are on it. We are qualified to do so because we go through door training each year. East F/As don't want this as part of a joint contract because they do not have flight deck access. If we are allowed on the extra F/A seat then they feel they deserve to ride up front.
Anyone can access a flight attendant jump seat as far as the FAA is concerned. There is no requirement for any training. Some airlines have in the past allowed any employee to use the flight attendant jump seat. The only requirement is that the airline have the minimum compliment of flight attendants on board.
