Surfer was probably a poor word choice, maybe beach bum would have been better. At any rate, I can picture it, and no, it's not appropriate for the career.

I'm sure that there are surfers out there making far more than any of us pilots.

Back to the topic, aren't there company standards on dress and appearance that address these points? Are they not being enforced? Seems like way too easy of a way for management to beat up a pilot group during contract time. Why give them the ammo?
