I did speak with one current Flight Check guy who was all airline as well but got furloughed and spent a brief period of time working for the TSA, which apparently was enough to get his foot in the Federal door so that might be an option.
This is one of those times when we need the "barf" smiley on APC. But you gotta do what you gotta do. I'd probably look at NTSB and FAA before TSA though, they both hire civilian pilots and it's not so competitive that you need massive vet points.
