Why are you embarrassed? In my experience Delta takes excellent care of it's veteran customers. Flight Attendants often make a point of thanking them for their service, as do we pilots.
It really doesn't matter that we can convince ourselves that this was an outlier (and I do agree that this was an outlier. I also agree that he shouldn't have been flying with Ebola-like symptoms).
It matters how this plays with the general flying public, and how it affects our reputation. Like it or not, their perception is their reality.
I'm embarrassed because, in this day and age, Delta has done a miserable job of empowering our front line employees (i.e., FAs, gate agents) to insert some common sense into the operation.
Common sense = sacrificial lamb to the D-0 gods.
