It was my experience over the years at FedEx, that our meterology department had the "rose colored glasses" for weather forecasts. Most of the time they were overly optimistic. Common joke was "It was the best weather money could buy." Between temporary conditions and intermittant conditions, they could usually get you legal to at least go take a look. However, when they said it was going to be bad you sat up and took notice.
At the other extreme are the clowns at the Weather Channel. Every day is a potential disaster for them. They don't seem happy unless there are hurricanes, snow storms or the infamous "Torcon" (whatever that is).
There is a local weather guy here in Memphis, Dave Brown on Channel 5, who seems to split the difference. I used him a lot to temper the FedEx forecasts. Dave would even question the National Weather Service when they would issue a severe thunderstorm warning for a particular cell. However, when Dave said it was going to be bad, we would duck and cover.
