That only works because the bully ends up at least a little bit bloodied in the process, as well. In this case, fighting back doesn't bloody Delta's nose at all. I doubt they care one way or the other. Because no matter what, they're getting their cost reduction. It's just a matter of how.
If you roll over for the bully and willingly give him or her whatever he want s(thank you sir, please may I have another!), you can be the bully will keep on picking on you until you do finally stand up. They point is not to hurt the bully, the point is to refuse to play the bully's game.
