Make no mistake it isn't fake. It's just that after cutting farm subsidies our government needed a way to sell cars and increase the agriculture industry and ethanol was/is the BS cashcow. Hydrogen will not be the answer in the short term (under 25yrs) either. Liquid coal is where it's happening. Check out what Montana is doing along with China. The US is just starting to get into it however coal can be manufactured to be much much much cleaner than gas and at roughly $40 a barrel equivalent. Plus Montana has enough coal to produce that we could make more gas from those deposits then from all the middle east.

The technology is there and our people know it. What you're seeing is an economy that is now use to paying $2+ per gal. and everyday we do that is one more day we will have leverage in the future over our "neighbors".

I don't really know anything about hydrogen except of it's chemical composition. I asked a scientist I know that works for Dow Chemicals what he thought and he said fools gold. Standing infront of him I knew what he meant which was "fools gold currently". If you see anything about hydrogen ect. it's just to sell cars.

That being said ethanol currently has extremely great potential in the sense that 60% landfills could be turned into it however it would trump the need for the raise in agriculture It's completely efficient if made from human waste(it also doesn't take much to convert) but from corn it's a bad deal unless they alter corn to contain more startch.

Vegabond as far as putting it in your engine goes you already put roughly 15% in it! It was the only way the industry could find a way to meet the administrations emission requirments. It was eaiser to put 15% in the gas and lower the pollution then to create an engine that did it. This was a few years ago though. Looking at the new models most are starting to swing it.

My family has farmed since the late 1890's in my hometown. Back in the 70's farming was a great industry. Nowdays it isn't. It's worse than the airlines by comparison. My father has grown rice for almost 30 years. Lately we have been growing other crops. However last year we were debating quitting as we were losing money every year now. Until this ethanol bit came around there was no reason for us to keep farming. In the past two years things have started to look very slightly better. Next year should be a step in the right direction. Ethanol from corn has directly saved the agriculture industry in direct or indirect means. So is ethanol a fuel we can use? Hell yes, very easy to make and very efficient.... if we get it from those sources. But currently our gov't is trying to find a way to cut farm subsidies and keep them in business while boosting the auto industry and cutting pollution. It's not going anywhere. That little E85 slogan they spent millions and millions on in their commercials will see to that.
