Again, pilots don't have to take it, sky isn't falling. Read the FAQs

Read the FAQs -- Good advice.

Better advice: Read the entire FAQs.

You plucked a phrase from the FAQs and presented it here out of context to make a point. Here's the context, and the mistake:

The FedEx Global Travel Discount Personal Travel - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document is divided into 9 Sections:
  • REINSTATEMENT OF SOUTHWEST DISCOUNT TRAVEL
  • TRAVEL CERTIFICATION TEST
  • TRAVEL PROFILE REQUIREMENT
  • GENERAL TICKETING INFORMATION
  • ELIGIBILITY FOR DISCOUNT TRAVEL
  • DRESS CODE REQUIREMENTS
  • ACCEPTABLE CONDUCT FOR EMPLOYEES, & [sic] QUALIFIED DEPENDENTS
  • AIRPORT AND FLIGHT BOARDING INFORMATION
  • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The second section, "TRAVEL CERTIFICATION TEST" begins with the question, "How do I take the discount travel certification test?" The answer is in two parts, as there are two ways to take the test, the Corporate Training Management System (CMTS), and the FedEx Learning Center (FLCDIRECT). The method that applies to a particular employee depends on the employee group to which he belongs. The answer looks something like this:

The certification test will be published online as follows:
  • Employees of FedEx Express should access the Corporate Training Management System ...
  • Employees of FedEx Corporation, FedEx Services, FedEx TechConnect, and FedEx Air Operations (with the exception of those working in Flight) should access the FedEx Learning Center ...
We pilots fall into the first category, so we should look for the test in the Corporate Training Management System.

How do you do that? you may ask. Well, that's exactly what the rest of the text after the elipsis explains. The only step it omits is the very first step. In order to enter the keyword (ctms), you must be on home.fedex.com -- the intranet home page. That page can only be accessed, of course, on FedEx property.

After you get started, the rest of the published instructions are spot on accurate. I guess you could access the FAQs online to read them ... but this is APC, right? We all expect to be spoonfed, and the spoon should be provided as well. So ...

Step-by-Step Process CTMS:

  1. Enter keyword as referenced above and login to the system with your LDAP credentials
  2. Click on ‘Student’ in the Main Menu section to the left
  3. Click on ‘Catalog’ and then click ‘Search’
  4. Type in “Interline Discount Travel” in the Title field
  5. Click ‘Submit’
  6. Link to test appears, Click on “GLBTRVL”
  7. Click on “Interline Discount Travel”
  8. To begin the test click on “Introduction;” employee must complete all five sections successfully to receive credit.

A few more tips:

Print out and refer to the FAQs -- the information will be helpful in answering the questions on the test.

Many of the questions require the selection of multiple answers - "Select all that apply". If you miss one, and then back up, the correct answers will usually be highlighted. Select them, and try again.

The course requires a Flash Player. Not all computers on FedEx property have Flash installed. Good luck finding one that does.

It appeared from my experience that there may be an audio component of those Flash modules. Each screen "plays" with progressively appearing text. Although the NEXT button is highlighted and active, DO NOT click on NEXT until the text "Press Next to continue ..." (or something like that) appears to the left of the buttons on the bottom bar of the Flash window. If you click NEXT too soon, you'll get kicked out with no credit and you'll get to start over.

The fifth and final module is a test which gives you no feedback until you are complete, and requires 100% accuracy to get credit. Refer to tip #1.

The time required published in the CMTS is 45 minutes. It can be done more quickly.

You realize, I'm sure, that the NEWS Section on the PILOT.fedex.com website is intended for consumption by ... pilots. When it includes an article which includes the statement, "All FedEx employees who wish to use their discount travel privilege on Southwest or any other eligible airline will be required to have successfully completed a new, online Personal Travel Certification Test," (underline added by me) I take that to mean ALL FedEx employees who wish to travel on any eligible airline. I only graduated from Memphis City Schools, so I could be missing something. After all, "ALL" and "any" are long, complicated words.
