IMHO
UPS is a stayed and conservative company. They make money doing what they do now. There's no need or drive to create a new market or innovate into something new until there's a proven demand and substantial profit margin.
FDX, though not as much as the past I think, is an innovator. "They" are not satisfied sitting on their laurels and keeping the status quo. Fred created an industry, and that spirit is still there. Take a few chances and it will pay off in the future, though maybe not immediately.
To me, it's a difference of drive... Fred wants to see his "baby" grow and succeed because he is personally invested in the growth and creation beyond monetary rewards. The other guys, well.. they got hired there because of a resume and are not personally invested in time and sweat. It's a paycheck.
As far as employee treatment... one pays more because they have to... or no one would put up with it.
again, my opinions... I could be wrong.
