Your fellow airline pilot and you should've also probably been able to deduce that there are various reasons why an airliner will leave its gear down after takeoff. They're called MELs. A quick one that comes to mind is an inop brake temp sensor requiring the gear to be cooled in flight for a specific time before retraction.

You should probably stop looking left for a little while. In the meantime, posts like these are probably better put on airliners.net.
His wording is a bit awkward, but his usage of "your" is correct.
