The thing is they don't even know what happened yet. These batteries are exceptionally volatile when they fail. They don't need oxy to burn, and really can't be put out once ignited. They simply have to be contained.

As an aside, I have a side business where we use lithium batts extensively. Both Li-ion, and lipo and we treat them like a ticking time bomb. Charged and stored in a firesafe container, and never charge in the model. They really are incredibly high energy, while also being incredibly volatile if damaged or abused.
