I'm guessing...JUST a guess...that it was that situation that made him stop giving a sh-t about passengers beyond getting them to their destination safely.

Exactly. I've had too many conversations with the flying public who are complain that $400 to fly from DC to Chicago for the weekend is highway robbery. When confronted with the suggestion to drive, the response is usually a combination/variation of "I don't want to drive all day Friday and Monday", "Gas is too expensive", and "I can't afford a hotel". So you want to fly halfway across the country in a sixth of the time it would take to drive...but you don't want to pay a penny more for that value added service?
