Similar story. In 1992 a Navy buddy of mine got his rejection letter from United. "Do you think I would have gotten hired if I told them my grandmother was Mexican," he asked me.
"Was she," I asked. "Yeah," he said.
"You resubmit an fresh app and check the Hispanic box. I bet you're working for United inside a month," I told him.
Sure enough, three weeks later he handed in his resignation and turned in his Alaska books.
