Midairs are kept down by the methods of seperation mentioned. There are no statistics released on all sorts of other problems, not the least of which is their odd method of altitude control and limited ability to run multi runway airports as much more than single runway airports.

That said, they have gotten much better over the last decade, but they still have a long way to go.
