Yeah, I know some people don't pay dues for religious reasons, but it is my understanding they pay the equivalent in charatible donations, or a contract maintenance fee, which is substantially less than dues.
But, I am fine with paying dues, the dues check off is for the convenience of ALPA, so the mother ship gets all the money it is entitled to, and at regular and predictable intervals. Great for business.
I would be more OK with paying dues when it is convenient for me, perhaps once a year like when I pay the IRS their fee on April 15th.
