Your reading the charts wrong. Use the chart for the 300ER not the base 300. Note the range each aircraft reaches a passenger only load not including cargo. Keep in mind those are weight only cargo capacities. The 777 has more cube which is what normally get used up first on mid range flights.
Had a guy in my AF Reserve unit who was/is a cargo load planner for UAL. He worked primarily 744 & 777 flts out of SFO. He said about 80 % of the time they cubed out first which favored the 777. With that it mind, they always allocated the dense/heavy stuff to the 744 which would really ring the register. I'd be thrilled to see a dozen more of each.
Edit-UAL isn't the 773ER though
