I started my aviation training back in 2004 at Eastern Michigan University and finished all my academics for my BS in Aviation Flight Technology in 2007; however because of financial issues my flight training has been very slowly progressing. I still have not received my degree because I have not yet finished all my ratings.
First of all, forget the degree. Drive the truck. Finish the flying, but forget the university. Find a mom-and-pop place that rents and does Part 61 flight training, and hammer out your ratings. Pump fuel for them. Get with the local soaring club and start taking training there. It's cheaper. It gets you an "in," and you may have a chance to start towing gliders. Join Civil Air Patrol; the aircraft are less espensive; do your instrument rating in one of their nice 182's. There are a lot of ways to save money.
Keep driving the truck. Fly when you're qualified and able, based on your income and certification.
If you're waiting on college or that's the big hold-up, and if you're paying university flight program prices, you're getting taken to the cleaners.
Stop taking out loans for flight training. You'll never make enough to stay caught up with them, especially not in early aviation.
Don't give up on your dreams to fly. Just go about it a little smarter with a little more planning.
