Years ago when I was a DC-9 First Officer I flew a trip with a particular Captain. It was probably ten years later when I saw him again. He looked like "death-warmed-over". Yes, that bad, no exaggeration. Sure enough he was flying international.
Now he was no picture of health in his DC-9 days, but later on he was cadaver-like.
I do think however that with the change from the three man cockpits and 12 hour rules to the relief pilot era and eight hour rules the deleterious effect is lessened.
