I think there are two things reporters know, politics and entertainment. The rest they don't. Sure there are some that can branch out into law because they were lawyers like a Megyn Kelly but I think that's their limit. For the rest they bring in experts and when it comes to aviation those experts are corporate pilots who got 2 hours in a Citation and spent just a tad more in Cessna 421s. The know it all at the local airport FBO counter who can't get any attention from the girl behind the desk. The guy who ratchets up a panic for the #3 tire being blown or when an American MD-80 is about to land nose wheel up he gives you the great insight that the pilots will shutdown the engines before the nose hits to save them from damage.
So really it's not as much about having low information voters as low information reporters and low experience experts.
For example, a low information reporter from our friends at CNN, "are asteroids caused by global warming or is this some sort of meteroic occasion?"
