I have to agree. While I happen to find it a bit OTT, and most captains will be happy with the JS pass and one's badge, the official requirement is for the JS rider to present his pass, his badge, his license, and his Medical. I always have them out when I ask for a JS, and I've been doing this for more than two decades now.
Your friend should have kept his mouth shut. He learned a life-lesson (hopefully).
