Yep. Especially if the guy in question was going to ride up front, or even if it was a possibility. Every time someone doesn't check all that is another fairly small risk but with severe consequences for one of the biggest and most necessary "perks" of the job. What's to gain by "keeping it cazh"? Sometimes the wrong people get that far. The document check could be the only way to catch it and it takes 10 seconds.
Props to the Captain for smacking down the little entitled smart alec with asymetrical buthurt. I hope he still would have let him ride if he got the hint, apologized and admitted his mistake though.
