This had to do with the 739 deliveries we were scheduled to take along with the 787's eventual deliveries. There were a need for the 147 furloughs and about 300 more to cover just the CAL flying before the merger was on the table. My source, manpower planning 2009 strategy meeting. Again prior to merger we needed bodies.

A bigger concern is the parking of UAL 752 and the eventual airbus. Sideward growth through attrition is not a good as real growth. This is we're the SLI shakeout will really matter. Not because we will furlough but I believe we need real growth for competition and all career longevity.
