I had UAL furloughs on our jumps eat who thought they'd NEVER see the cockpit of a UAL airplane again because the airline was in such dire straits. Yes really, Mr Anonymous. I can honestly say that 3 years ago(pre merger) I was confident that UAL was going to do very well in the economic recovery that was ahead. I didn't like the pain we were suffering at the time, but I was certain that we were postured for success. As for CAL, I don't believe they/you were 'on it's last legs'. I believed that there was going to be industry consolidation ESPECIALLY after the DL/NW merger, but I don't recall ever saying or thinking that CAL was going to fail. I viewed the UAL/CAL combination to be the most fitting of the available options. I honestly didn't expect any carrier to pursue a self destructive business plan that would end in their demise - the only one I can remember is Independence Air. IMOutsiderO, the closest UAL ever came to it's 'death bed' was during BK when the creditors committee was deciding whether the portfolio was worth more in a sale or in a chance long term ROI. When they didn't divest any of our valuable markets or route authorities I was sure we were safe. I've never been concerned since. I know you don't believe it, but the CORPORATE leadership of UAL rightly (in hind sight) chose to posture UAL for a merger. UAL's strategic course and the implications of the resulting choices are quite simple to see (for those willing to be objective).

ps. I don't know why you find it necessary to put my name in the post. Please enlighten me on your motivation. It doesn't bother me, but it was rather obvious so I thought I'd ask.
