This is nothing new and it's industry wide. There are ZERO airline contracts that don't favor the upper half of the seniority list. Some like to say, "we need to get better terms and pay for new hires...," but they never want to give up anything to get it; Same with reserve rules. No hotel during and crappy pay during training are things you can even find at FedEx and Delta; $30-36/hr. first year pay at UPS and Hawaiian to fly a widebody internationally.
Using the regionals as a stepping stone and going to a place that you can upgrade at quickly because of turnover has always been the smartest way to do things, unless you're trying to make a career out of a regional. 13 years ago I went to a place that I was able to upgrade at 2 years and it was one of those places people didn't want to go because of it's crappy pay and contract.
