Yep, at L-UAL a probationary pilot's money is no good on a layover and at work we have the new hire's back. The only thing a new hire should focus on during that first year is bringing the skills and learning the job.
I hope the brand x crews have the same mantra.
As a CAL guy, I agree with you. When I was hired ('07), many [but not all] of the Captains did just as you said. That being said, we have to keep these newbies out of trouble for the probationary year. I hope once the seniority ****ing contest is over, we all treat each other like our mamas expect.
