Sometimes it's NOT about what was said, but how it was said and the associated personality test that goes into the whole airline pilot interview theatre game.

Interviews can be A LOT like a checkride, it's over in the FIRST 5 minutes. The other 40-55 minutes can just be the HR/interviewer/line pilots validating what happened in that first 5 minutes.
Personally I feel an answer like that is a cop out, a canned humble answer. And that's how the interviewers felt, because they asked him again and tried for him to get a real answer. He wasn't hired (not for this question, he had screwed up big time in the group interview).
