Thank your lucky stars that you came from a background that you come from, have other financial options, a wife that has a good paying job, and the ability to go to the Guard/Reserves to keep up your currency and can wait for that Major to call.
If you didn't have that flying background and that ability to keep current - you might find yourself in a very different situation with regards to your future airline pilot career aspirations without being one of the many regional pilots slogging in out in the trenches hoping for that break.
