To my knowledge (going back to mid-90s), the AF has always offered the 50% lump sum option with the bonus. In this case, a 9-year contract is worth a total of $225,000, so the 50% option lets you take 112,500 just for signing.
The previous (standard) 5-year contracts were/are worth $125,000, so the 50% lump sum is/was $67,500.
In 2000, they offered 1 yr, 3 yr, 5 yr, through 20 years service, or through 25 years of service. The 5 yr, 20, and 25 options were at 25k per year. I don't remember what the 1 yr and 3 yr offerings were, but they were less cash. The upfront amount was limited to 50% or 100k, whichever was less.
