I would have thought this to be a fairly simply process...although I know there is gouge all over the place so it can get confusing. I'm from an E-6B Background and almost all of my flights were augmented.
Typically, we were 3 piloted. So on an 8 hour flight...we usually divided up the junior 3/2P's getting 40% of the flight time and 20% went to the A/C. So the 3/2P's got 3.2 of 1st pilot and 3.2 in second pilot...giving a grand total of 6.4 hours of flight time. The AC get's 1.6 and 1.6 respectively..giving him 3.2 hours. That is a very common flight logged in my records.
The AC get's 8 hours of PIC time. So my totals were 3.2 and 8 for their own categories. Only logging 3.2 PIC time is absurd in my opinion (no disrespect intended). Who was in charge of the flight for the rest of the 4.8 hours? For all intents and purposes..PIC doesn't correlate with being at the controls. It is for being responsible for that entire flight/sortie...and in this case it was 8.0 hours worth.
As for the other time...I don't count it, UNLESS an airline specifically says it is ok. But that seems to be the exception rather than the norm. Just my 2 cents. I'm also still in the Navy so I by no means count myself a subject matter expert.
