We've been using a HUD for a few years now at my company and like anything, it takes a little getting used to. Once you learn the new scan and get used to looking "through" the display, it's pretty nice. I totally understand the idea of becoming a HUD cripple, but its not really that debilitating.
In fact, going into OAK this past Saturday afternoon, my FO and I were in mock panic - I had both my auto-throttles AND HUD MEL'd inoperative.
And somehow, I was able to land a pretty normal visual approach to RW29 without dragging my rear on the seawall at the approach end.
Our HUDs also display AOA, which is a pretty nice cross reference to have for all configurations no matter where you have the airspeed bugged.
ABSOLUTE KEY in my opinion - but I'm totally bias.
As far as a HUD now - I also agree that they can end up putting to much information on a HUD.
