I got hired at Hawaiian in 2001 with no PIC turbine , no type rating, 2200 total pilot time, 8000 FE time and no degree. Now I'm a 767 Captain. You don't need a degree, you need a recommend and a personality. But the majors discriminate against you w/o a degree. It's funny, I was an enlisted NCO Flight Engineer and now military officers (FO's) have to get my permission for the jumpseat. :-)
