Before my time at UAL they would PS your wife out to the dinner in DEN for the event. I live in DEN so they paid for my wife's dinner as well and she also presented me with my set of wings.
Never going to turn down a free dinner, but one of the Training Captains handed out our wings. Low key, but he shook our hand and seemed genuinely happy to have us onboard, like everybody else so far. The Union has an informational dinner and everybody seems happy with that. Won't speak for everybody but for most, this ain't our first rodeo, and grasp that there is a lot ahead to learn. A set of wings that will be replaced with other ones very soon is less a big deal than getting all training complete and out on the line. Or actually out on reserve.
No complaints from an FNG.
