Sierra, fax your summons to the CPSC. They'll drop/pay you for a trip that conflicts with your jury duty. If you get extended, which happened to me last year when I was picked to be the foreman (foreperson, whatever) you'll need to call scheduling and let them know. Once you're released from duty, you need to call scheduling and let them know you're available again. They won't just drop the rest of the month, for example. It's one trip/a group of reserve days at a time.
I get called all the time in CA. My wife has never been summoned. I'm not sure how they "randomly" select people but I get it exactly once a year. Good luck.
Be happy if you don't get called by the Feds. I got a summons for Federal Grand Jury duty.
It's a VERY big deal. Basically, it takes one week a month out of your life for a whole year (at least in the District of St. Paul).
It's a two day selection process, and I got out of the big show at the last cut.
It was shaping up to be a rather significant piece of civic duty.
