Probably have to spend 6 months to a year in the back seat, if hired as a Flight Engineer. If you have your 1500 hours and ATP, you get a sim evaluation ride, and up-grade. Some hiring is done right into the right seat. Last group of Flight Engineers appears to be PFE's, who do not have the interest in up-grading. Not home based unless you live in Detroit and consider that your home.
