I get what you're saying. Some regionals only started paying for hotels more recently... My regional didn't pay for mine back when I got hired because they had piles of applications for each newhire slot. They only started once they couldn't find enough qualified applicants.
I found it to be something that I didn't really think about and certainly didn't get worked up over it. It sure hasn't dampened the amount of pilots applying. The day hiring was announced, I got numerous phone calls, texts, and facebook messages.
