You don't need your car out there unless you plan on moving out west. The new light rail runs right by the hotel and you can jump on that and go anywhere downtown for some drinks or whatever

We had guys drive SLC-FAT-LGB. If your an outdoorsy person having a car is great. Nothing beats SLC for quick access to ski resorts and hiking. That's something the public transit can't provide. If you don't care about that stuff and just want to party downtown then you don't need a car. The hotel shuttle goes to the store.
I would bring the car, unless you plan to commute to base and don't want a car there.
But on the drive from SLC to FAT, don't just blindly follow mapquest, do your homework...it will route you through the yosemite back gate which is closed seasonally. Heard of more than on person who got to the back gate and then had to detour around a very large mountain range.
