The ads are really ****in' me off, that's about put me over the edge, time to bail. Seems they're all about increasing customer base and revenues to justify and pay for higher executive compensation. They reached that point in the life cycle of a once-good company where greedy managers dumb quality and just trade off the good name for as long as the party lasts (until the customers wise up).
I think my subscriber account is about $2500 after 25-ish years...I wonder why so low? I've always had cars, and rental or home insurance by them.
Yes, you will get your subscriber savings check when you cancel all insurance (after the required waiting period), but you can continue to bank with them even if you don't insure with USAA. I've been doing exactly that for about 6 years now.
It's worth pointing out that you have to cancel ALL of your insurance policies to get ANY of your SS money back. I switched my homeowners and auto policies to someone else; the small personal property policy I had for my wife's engagement ring and some other stuff slipped my mind at the time. When I called to ask about my SS balance check after the required waiting period, USAA educated me on that policy. It amounted to me having to wait an additional waiting period (6 months, I think). Just another reason to boot them.
I'd switch banks too, but I still find that USAA banking is the most convenient while moving around every couple of years (I'm still on active duty). That said, they irked me recently. They froze my savings account due to "suspected fraudulent activity" and didn't tell me (no call, email, nothing). The "suspected fraudulent activity" was me making a withdrawal from the savings account to pay for an unexpected auto repair (in the middle of a PCS...which USAA knew about since I had already changed my address). Unfortunately for me, that savings account also covers my checking account if I need to write a check for more than is in the checking account.
Consequently, due to more expenses related to the same auto repair, the following day USAA bounced three checks of mine. Really stinking annoying since I've banked with them since college and haven't bounced a check in somewhere around 20 years. Thanks a lot, USAA.
One of these days when I'm not moving so much, I'll go through the trouble to switch to a good local bank with online banking and good customer service. Until then, USAA gets my banking business simply because it's easier for me, not because of their outstanding service.
