I think a lot of the "rage" against airlines is something that speaks to our current culture. People expect perfection, and to have it cheaply. This is a product of the consumerism, throw-away society we have become. Things like "Have it Your Way" and such. Consumers don't understand that aviation is an expensive undertaking, partly because of regulatory requirements and partly because of the physics behind sailing a few hundred thousand pounds of mass through the upper atmosphere with regular success. People today have taken that for granted, and many are used to the ideal of a pre-deregulation industry.
I currently am on the outside looking in (mil pilot hoping for a job), but I'm a frequent customer of the industry. I can say that I have had few truly bad experiences. US Airways lost my bags for a few days once, and I had a flight cancel due to a hurricane. But I recognize when some things are beyond the abilities of the airline to fix. Other consumers seem to ignore that.
I pay for a ride, and I only expect one. Having to buy my own lunch, paying $25 for a bag etc isn't that big a deal and I plan and budget accordingly. Non-pilot friends I know seem to feel the opposite...that being pampered and given everything is their right. Sorry, but if you want that then PAY for it. Having a meal, big seat and such isn't important to me...America needs to wake up and get out of this entitled phase.
