A buddy of mine commuted MSP-LAX for a year until he could get the jet, and never missed a commute. He said he was up front sometimes but still made it.
Focus on getting through training but at some point get on the SAPA forums when you can and find the reserve survival guide. Learn the reserve policies and ask people when you have questions.
