before you go pay the big prices for jeppessen you can get the same material from the FAA themselves in the "Airplane flying handbook" and "Pilots handbook of aeronautical knowledge". Those two combined with actual flying would have you private pilot ready once you met the hour requirements. I've soloed over 30 people using those books and only had one guy ever fail his written, however he never studied.
