ALPA was the driving factor in this. ALPA was far more dismissive of hiring African-Americans than UAL. When they finally had to comply with the order, they shunned many qualified military applicants to hire minorities who were markedly inferior, as pilots, to the average white applicant. Thank goodness that is, for the most part over, and minority applicant's are no longer hired for a lack of experience. God Bless America!
Maybe I'm naive but I never really understood all this. Just hire the best people regardless of superficial factors. In the end we are all people and especially in this profession, our passengers just deserve the best pilots they can get, not just someone hired or not hired because of their gender, race, etc.
Fifty years ago it was almost unheard of for a woman to go to medical school. Today, more than half of all med school students are women.
