As far as what can go wrong with a commute. Simple, give yourself enough flights to get to work and if that fails we have a "Prudent Pilot Procedure".
But what constitutes "enough" flights to get to work if you cannot really count on the jumpseat? Like I said, I don't think any system is perfect and I am not suggesting you should change because ours is "best", I just like our current system better, having experienced both as a commuter...and I would also submit that the argument that 'It's all good' because we have an "unwritten agreement" at one base, on one side of the seniority list (LUAL), is nonsensical.
