I complained about this very thing and was told they were in the process of modifying the seat assignment software. It's been a while but, supposedly, the computer is supposed to assign "better" seats in seniority order (ie EP, exit row, window, aisle, THEN middle).

What about the people who list for both vacation and regular passes on the same flight then an hour out they cancel whatever one fits them best?
