I flew with the head honcho for my airplane program a few weeks ago. I asked him the 300 new hire question and he quickly responded that it would be 600 minimum. He isn't involved in the hiring process, but he rubs elbows with those who are. Take it for what it's worth.
600+ was the number that was thrown around with these 4th floor types. I kept on inching closer to listen but my hearing is going bad too.
