Management had a plan B that didn't involve B717's. It had about 50 fewer mainline jets in it, as they couldn't economically get out of a bunch of CRJ-200 commitments AND manage their capacity for the airline. All this was explained during the ratification process. What you wrote above isn't based on fact, it's your belief.
Delta had contractual obligations for other 50 seaters, yet they found a process to get out of them without Delta pilots caving on their scope section and self financing the rest. It could have been done this time too. But why would management want to take that route when DALPA was so eager to help breath new life into the failed RJ experiment.
