No they were grimaces. As a professional pilot for over ten years now I have learned one thing. And if you struck up a conversation with a Continental dude, and he "grimaced," maybe it was because he thought that you were a jerk. Or a weirdo. Perhaps you had bad breath. Or all of the above.
I've met plenty of jerks in my lifetime, but that shouldn't make me the sad sac that you dear sir appear to be.
